Should You Train to Failure to Build Muscle?

Do you need to train to failure to build muscle? On heavy compound lifts like squats, deadlifts, and bench press, form is most likely to break down exactly when the weight feels heaviest, which is also the point closest to failure. Leaving a rep or two in reserve on those lifts keeps your technique intact through the whole set.

When is training to failure actually worth it?

Failure training fits best in lower-risk situations: isolation exercises and machines, where a breakdown in form is less likely to turn into an injury, and often just the last set of an exercise rather than every set of every session. Some experienced lifters use occasional failure sets as a deliberate test of where their limits actually are, then back off to reps in reserve for their regular working sets.

What it is not well suited for is heavy, technical compound lifts done for every set of every session. The combined cost, more fatigue, more soreness, and more risk of a technical breakdown under load, usually outweighs the small or nonexistent growth benefit in that context.
