Say you bench pressed 185 lb for 5 hard reps. Epley gives 185 × (1 + 5/30) ≈ 216 lb. Brzycki gives 185 × (36/32) ≈ 208 lb. The two formulas won't match exactly, but they'll land in the same neighborhood, and that neighborhood is the useful number, not a precise figure down to the pound.

How accurate are these formulas actually?

Estimates typically land within about 10 percent of a person's true one rep max, and accuracy improves the closer the set was to true failure and the lower the rep count. A hard set of 3 reps gives a tighter estimate than a hard set of 12, because more reps means more fatigue accumulates during the set itself, which the simple formulas don't fully account for.
